How did Sport Clips' startup costs compare to other franchises you may have considered?
I was days away from signing with another hair concept. The financial model was almost identical. Once I realized the hair business was good, I just needed to pick the concept. The moment I walked into a Sport Clips Store I realized which one was right for me. The other franchise told me I was throwing away half my market by going with only men. I think it had been a day or two before I had read a quote “In niches, there are riches” – It was an easy decision.

Was the initial training helpful and thorough? Did it prepare you well for what was to come?
Yes, the initial training was helpful and thorough. I think the only way to have problems is if you forget to use what you learn. All the manuals are extremely thorough. We were well prepared for success.

Were you able to get a good territory when you started? Was Sport Clips' real estate department a big help?
We were able to get a very good territory. It is basically an untapped market right now. Sport Clips Real Estate department gave us several stores we could get into, so we had a lot of options.

Was it important for you to be able to keep your job when you opened your first store?
That was something we were focusing on--something that didn't necessitate always having to be there. If (you) work the system correctly, have a manager who's taking care of the day to day, you can schedule an hour or two a week once you're up and running to manage the store, without having to be there. For us, it's mainly a model that will become a revenue generator as we grow.
